Official information request regarding investment of endowment funds
I refer to your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act)
dated 11 May 2024:
1.
Has Victoria University of Wellington invested any sort of funds in any
companies over the 2022-2024 period to date?
2.
If yes, please provide the following:
a.
A comprehensive list of the companies in which the university holds
investments.
b.
The corresponding amounts invested in each company.
Aside from a small number of term deposits, Te Herenga Waka (the University) does not
undertake any investments itself.
Investment of endowment funds and philanthropic donations is managed by the Victoria
University of Wellington Foundation (the Foundation). Whilst the Foundation is a
controlled subsidiary of the University, it is not subject to the Act. Any information held
by the University in relation to the Foundations investment activities is held as an agent
on behalf of the Foundation and is not considered to be official information held by the
University.
Therefore, as far as your request relates to the activities of the Foundation, your request is
refused in accordance with s18(g) of the Act as the information is not held by the
University and we have no grounds for believing that the information is held by another
agency or organisation that is subject to the Act.
More information about the Foundation, including its annual reports and financial
statements is available a
t https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/engage/giving/foundation. The
Foundation’s Principles for Responsible Investment summary scorecard for 2023 is
available
here.
Wellington Univentures does have holdings in companies that have been created in order
to commercialise University research. They do not invest in existing companies. As these
holdings are not related to the investment of endowment funds we do not consider them
to be within the scope of this request.
