Official information request for complaints received for LAWS214 and
LAWS312
I refer to your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act)
dated 15 May 2024:
“The number, and copies of each, complaints received by the University
pertaining to any of the following courses or complaints pertaining to
individuals engaged in the delivery of such courses in that capacity–
LAWS214 in 2024, to date;
LAWS312 in 2023 and 2024, to date.”
The University was made aware of issues with the delivery of LAWS214 in 2024 through a
number of channels, including through student associations and class representatives.
However only one written complaint was received on this issue.
The Faculty of Law identified an initial error in the automated marking of an exam for
LAWS312 in Trimester 2 2023. That error was remediated, and the correct marks for
individual students were ascertained. As is the usual practice a scaling (as provided in the
Assessment Handbook) was applied to the marks’ distribution for the entire class. At that
time, a comprehensive explanation and justification of this process was provided to
students in Laws 312. Whilst this error affected a number of students, only one written
complaint was received.
Copies of the complaints received are withheld in accordance - s9(2)(a) in order to protect
the privacy of natural persons and s9(2)(ba)(i) as the information is subject to an
obligation of confidence and making this information available would be likely to
prejudice the supply of similar information, or information from the same source, and it
is in the public interest that such information should continue to be supplied.
Please note, we have not considered appeals or requests for grade reconsideration as
complaints for the purposes of this request.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of the
decisions made regarding this request. Information about how to make a complaint is
available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
