Thank you for your email of 19 May 2024 to the Department of Corrections – Ara Poutama
Aotearoa, requesting information about heat pumps in prisons. Your request has been
considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
As an organisation, we have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our staff and
the people we manage. Because the sites we manage across the country are subject to
significantly different climate and weather conditions, we have installed heat pumps in
some prisons for use in summer during extreme temperatures as well as winter.
You requested:
I am writing to request information under the Official Information Act regarding the
installation of heat pumps in New Zealand prisons over the past 12 months.
Specifically, I would like to know the following details:
The total number of heat pumps installed in New Zealand prisons during the specified
period.
A breakdown of the installations by location (i.e., staff areas, prisoner areas, and
visit areas).
The number of heat pumps installed in each of the above-mentioned areas.
Please provide this information in a format that allows for easy comparison and
analysis. If possible, include any relevant documentation or reports related to these
installations.
The information you have requested is attached as Appendix One and includes a list of all
heat pumps installed in prisons for the last 12-month period, as of 28 May 2024.
