Weather
Island. Heavy rain is also expected in western areas, especially as the front moves up the South Island
Outlook
during Friday. The front may become slow-moving near central New Zealand on Saturday.
There is low confidence that warning amounts of rain will fall in Fiordland and most of Westland on
Thursday, increasing to moderate confidence on Friday. There is also moderate confidence that a rainfall
warning will be needed for the Grey District, Buller, Tasman, western Marlborough, the Tararua Range and
Mount Taranaki on Friday and Saturday. About Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa there is moderate
confidence that northwest winds will reach warning strength on Thursday and Friday, while there is low
confidence that warning strength winds will also affect Fiordland, Southland and inland areas of Otago and
Canterbury on Thursday.
Snow may affect some of the higher roads of the southern South Island overnight Friday to Saturday, but it
is unlikely that a widespread snow warning will be required.
A low may form over the northern Tasman Sea late in the week and move towards the North Island during
the weekend. Currently, there is a lot of uncertainty about the forecast position and intensity of this low.
There is low confidence that a warning for severe gale north to northeast winds will be needed in Northland
and Auckland on Saturday and Sunday and that warning amounts of heavy rain will fall in these places on
Sunday.
