Thunderstorm Outlook
Thunderstorm risk is considered moderate this afternoon
and early evening for eastern Northland, eastern Bay of
Plenty, Waitomo, northern Manawatū, Gisborne, Taupō,
Taumarunui, Taranaki, Whanganui, Taihape, and the
ranges of Hawke's Bay.
There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms for inland
parts of the South Island from Inland Marlborough, Nelson,
Buller, and the Canterbury High Country. Any
thunderstorms that occur will bring localised heavy rain
with rates of 10 to 25 mm per hour. For the South Island
risk areas small hail is possible, and there is also a low risk
of localised downpours (rainfall rates exceeding 25 mm per
hour) from slow moving storms.
Severe Weather Outlook
A low will lie slow-moving in the Tasman Sea on
Wednesday and Thursday, then weaken and move
across New Zealand later Friday and Saturday. A colder
southwest flow should then spread over the South Island
later Saturday behind the low.
Various associated fronts and rain-bands will spread
across New Zealand from Thursday to Saturday, but at
this stage the risk of rainfall amounts reaching warning
criteria is considered minimal.
Prepared by the NEMA Monitoring, Alerting and Reporting Centre to provide awareness that supports informed decision making.
