Re: Renewals of skateparks
Thank you for your email dated 08 June 2024, in which you requested information about the
renewals of skate parks. The specific details of your request and our response are below.
•
Can you please provide me with the name, address, amount of funding allocated
to any current or upcoming potential renewals of skateparks within the Auckland
area in the 2024/2025/2026 year?
Please refer to Attachment A.
•
Can you advise how many skateparks had any type of
upgrade/renewal/furnishment in the 2023 Financial Year within the Auckland
area?
Please refer to Attachment B.
(Note: we have also included January-June 2023 in the attachment)
•
Can you please give me a breakdown of how many skateparks currently have
lights and allow nighttime use during winter?
We are aware that a Skateboarding New Zealand survey highlights that lighting and weather
are the two biggest barriers to skate.

Historically, Council has not provided specific lighting for nighttime use of skate park assets,
as we didn’t think it was safe and didn’t want to promote nighttime use during winter. This
thinking has changed, we have seen the success of lights at skate parks like Western
Reserve in Orewa. Lighting is now considered in any new skatepark or upgrade to existing
facility where it is considered appropriate. Projects where lighting is being explored include
Victoria Park, Tawaipaeira, Goodall Reserve and Huapai Domain (this list is not exhaustive).
We have run a report of our asset data which shows the below five skate parks have lighting
in their immediate vicinity that may light up all, or part, of a skatepark. However, there may
be other skateparks across the region that have lighting that passively lights part of a skate
park i.e. on adjacent walkways, etc.
