OIA 24-25-07 – Te Waka Hourua Trip to San Francisco. 
 
Thank you for your email of 18 July to New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), making a 
request under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act). You requested the following 
information: 
 
Did the members of the NZ Venture Capital community who attended for this trip pay for this 
trip themselves, or was this funded by the taxpayer? 
How much taxpayer money was spent on flights, accommodation, and associated trip 
expenses for this trip. 
 
The response to your request is as follows. 
 
In early July 2024, NZTE accompanied a group from the New Zealand (NZ) Venture Capital 
community to San Francisco for Te Waka Hourua. Te Waka Hourua is a NZTE curated 
programme for New Zealand’s venture growth funds, that aims to provide global insights, case 
studies, and US connections to support the success of the New Zealand growth companies in 
their portfolio. NZTE has a role to play in educating New Zealand investors to ensure they have 
a global perspective for the benefit of New Zealand companies in their portfolios. 
  1.  The members of the NZ Venture Capital community who attended this trip paid for their 
own flights to and from the US as well as individual meals and incidentals. A portion of 
the accommodation costs were covered by NZTE. 
2.  The overall costs incurred by NZTE were $16,056 for NZTE staff to travel to market, 
$35,817* in accommodation expenses, $8,837 for ground transportation, group catering 
of $7,995, $3,533 for resources and collateral, and $12,589 for venue hire. 
 
*This includes NZTE and delegation accommodation costs.
