Tēnā koe Tim
Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation, received on 24 July 2024, in
which you asked for:
a list of all accommodation sites administered by DOC, including their address,
number of each type of accommodation available at each site (e.g. X unpowered
campsites, Y powered sites, Z cabins/lodges) and the annual number of bookings,
occupancy rate and revenue collected for the past 3 financial years? Ideally if you
could provide the information in excel or csv format.
We have considered your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982.
I regret that I am not able to provide you with the information you seek as you have not
responded to our email of 5 August indicating that clarification was required to enable us to
respond to your request. As a result, your request has not been specified with the due
particularity required under section 12(2) of the Of icial Information Act. To identify and obtain
the information you seek, further discussion is needed on the following matters:
1. Whether the numbers sought are for
bookable or non-bookable, or both, types of
‘accommodation sites’.
2. The request for
site addresses range from street addresses for popular seaside
campgrounds, to GPS coordinates for more remote sites, and various other things in
between. There is no full, easily accessible, definitive list for ‘addresses.’
3. What is meant by
‘accommodation sites administered by DOC’? These can be
defined in dif erent ways e.g. those managed by third parties such as concessionaires.
4.
What level of detail is required regarding ‘capacity’. Our Enterprise Asset
Management system does not hold the sleeping capacity for all Bunkrooms or Cabin,
Lodges, Cottages or Campsite Accommodation.
5. Al of the above play into
occupancy rates and revenue, and how exactly we capture
that for the past 3 financial years.
6. It would be helpful to know
what information or insights you are seeking to gain from
the data, which wil condition the way it is then formatted in excel.

You are entitled to seek an investigation and review of my decision by writing to an
Ombudsman as provided by section 28(3) of the Of icial Information Act.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on the
Department’s website.
If you would like to discuss this response with us, please contact Nick Pearce, Business
Analyst, on [email address]. I also encourage you to explore the datasets publicly
available at
DOC Open Spatial Data (arcgis.com).
