Thank you for your email on 14 August 2024, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for
the following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Can you please provide me with the numbers of pacemakers inserted into people in
New Zealand by race and age, from July 2010 to July 2024?

Please find attached
Appendix 1, which shows the numbers of publicly-funded hospital
discharges following a procedure to insert a pacemaker, broken down by ethnicity (Māori,
Pacific, Asian or other) and by age group, from the 2009/10 calendar year to the 2023/24
calendar year.
Please note that data for 2021 onwards is provisional and subject to change, and to avoid
revealing sensitive information about potentially identifiable individuals in our data, all values
between 1 and 5 are suppressed and represented as <5.
This information is withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act as it is necessary to protect the
privacy of individuals concerned. The need to protect the privacy of these individuals is not
outweighed by the public interest in the release of this information.
