Dear Mr Voss
I refer to your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), on 17 August 2024, regarding
wagon classes, asking:
“I am reaching out to request a list of all wagon classes (IH, IK, etc.) currently in use on the KiwiRail
network. Additionally, I would appreciate it if you could provide information on any specific regions
where these wagon classes are typically deployed.” Please find attached a list of all wagon classes currently used on KiwiRail’s network.
The most common wagon classes used on the network are the CFT general and CFT heavy wagons.
Most wagon classes can travel on most of the network, however there are certain wagons restricted
to certain lines.
I have also provided a map of our national network that identifies major forestry, coal and
manufacturing industries that KiwiRail provides freight services for. We also move products to and
from coastal and inland ports and freight distribution hubs. This map provides a general picture of
where we would use particular wagons to move particular commodities.
This decision has been made under the OIA. You have the right to seek an investigation and review
of this response by the Ombudsman, in accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details
can be found on the Ombudsman’s website:
