, and am curious abut the state of nuclear
power in New Zealand. I was directed here after contacting the official government

Specifically, I would like to know the state of legality of the construction and operation of
nuclear power plants in New Zealand, and whether the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone,
Disarmament, and Arms Control Act of 1987 prohibits the construction and operation of
nuclear power plants (or indeed, whether there are any laws in New Zealand that prohibit
these activities). According to Wikipedia
(https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_nuclear-free_zone), the Act does not
prohibit these activities, and reading through the Act, it also does not seem to. However,
the wording around “nuclear explosive device” is a little ambiguous, and could possibly
include nuclear power-generating plants within its scope, so I’d like to hear it from an
official source. 
 
Note that this is leaving resources consents and other requirements that would need to be
considered completely aside. My question is purely about the legality.
