RE: MC lines relating to nuclear free (for nuclear fission) - s 9(2)(g)(i)
Thanks Marissa
Yes, we’l put it back with a replacement text, wil be similar to:
This Government's policy is that New Zealand is nuclear free and so we do not intend to review current legislation.
There is no current commercial interest in building traditional nuclear fission power stations in New Zealand.
You could add a note along the lines of:
s 9(2)(g)(i)
Thanks for this
Tamara

Hi Tamara
It came from the Minister, he wrote on it when it came to signing out the ministerial out.
Let me know how you want to approach it but could always put it back to the Minister with the new lines
added in with notes along the lines of the below for his context.
Thanks,
Marissa

Thanks Alexis - we have had feedback from the Minister on this letter that this Governments policy
is nuclear free. Could you change the fourth paragraph to reflect that more clearly. I am also aware of
another MC, SB24-440, which has similar lines - could that MC also be updated.

Innovation - Fusion
MBIE officials recently met with two firms involved in the development of fusion technology
– Open Star Technologies (which is Wellington-based) and US-based, Type One Energy. Both

s 9(2)(a)
firms are developing demonstration projects which aim to generate electricity from fusion
before 2030 and prove that this technology can be commercialised.
Both firms have identified New Zealand as at the forefront of developing the innovative
technologies needed to bring forward fusion technology, such as high temperature
superconductors being developed at the Robinson Research Institute.
s 9(2)(b)(ii)
Fusion generation is seen as a potential replacement for coal-fired generation, offering
emissions-free baseload generation. Both firms suggested that fusion reactors could be
placed within retired (or retiring) coal power stations and make use of the existing
infrastructure which would make it relatively straightforward to incorporate into the existing
energy system. The timing of when such systems will be commercially available is uncertain,
though Type One Energy are confident they will have an operational prototype by 2029.
