Official Information Act request relating to Correspondence from Barack Obama 
regarding Pike River Mine disaster 
 
Thank you for your request made under the Official Information Act (the Act), received on 6 
October 2024. You requested: 
 
“Under the Official Information Act 1982, I request all messages of support from former 
US President Barack Obama to former Prime Minister John Key concerning the Pike 
River Mine accident.” 
 
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet does not hold information relating to your 
request,  but  I  believe  such  information  may  be  held  by  the  Ministry  of  Foreign  Affairs  and 
Trade. Accordingly, I have decided to transfer your request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 
and Trade under section 14(b)(i) of the Act.  
 
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has the usual timeframes under the Act from receipt 
of this transfer to make a decision on your request.
