OIA request 24/25 0356 Request for Citizenship Application data
Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on 8 October 2024.
On 11 October 2024 the portion of your request relating to citizenship was transferred to the
Department of Internal Affairs (Department) pursuant to section 14(b)(ii) of the Act. This section
provides that a request or part of a request can be transferred where the information, or some
of the information, is believed by the person dealing with the request to be more closely
connected with the functions of another department.
You requested –

I want to know how many no of people currently holding New Zealand Permanent
residency visa who applied for citizenship as up to today.
On 23 October 2024 we contacted you via email to clarify your request. It was explained that
every applicant who applies for New Zealand citizenship by grant (under the standard
requirements) must have Permanent Residency (PR) as a prerequisite. This means, that
everyone applying for citizenship by grant (through the normal channels) will have PR when
applying. We also asked you to specify a date range for your request. To date we have not
received a response.
In response to your request, I can provide you with the following information.
