OIA: 1340027 – Changes to Ka Ora Ka Ako
Thank you for your email of 26 October 2024 to the Office of the Associate Minister of Education,
Hon David Seymour, which was then transferred to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) on 15
November 2024. You have requested the fol owing information:
1. Please provide the cost and savings projections and assessments that show the speculated
130M cost savings with the new school lunches program.
2. Also please provide the nutritional assessment and the proposals government received that
led to the decision to overhaul the menu and monopolize the vendors.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
In response to part one of your request, the Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches programme
currently costs approximately $319 mil ion per calendar year for the provision of lunches. Based on
current rol numbers, the Ministry estimates the programme to cost approximately $189 mil ion in
2025.
These figures are based on every learner enrol ed at schools participating in the programme
receiving a lunch each day. This equates to a savings figure of approximately $130mil ion for the
2025 calendar year.
Please refer to Table One for a further breakdown of the 2025 estimated costs.
