Hon Chis Bishop - Infrastructure Minister
Hon Simeon Brown - Minister of Transport
The Post 8.10.24 had an article 'Tunnel options on fast-track list' it mentioned the by pass tunnel, the other option
being to build a second Mt Victoria tunnel either parallel or diagonal to the existing one.
When the Wellington motorway was built in the 1960s the plan was for two Terrace tunnels and a second Mount
Victoria tunnel. A pilot tunnel for this sceond tunnel was drilled through in the early 1970s. I don't know where the
entrance portal is but the exit portal is dirrectly opposite Ruahine St, Hataitai. It is near the existing Mr Victoria
tunnel but not parallel. Originally vertical bars were installed to prevent people entering but children from Hataitai
squeezed through and played there, so a cribb wall was construted to seal the portal. I understand the Ministry of

Works acquired properties in Mt Victoria and Wellington Rd, Kilbirnie - the land to be used for roading. Why is this
planned and partially executed project never mentioned when the need for a second Mt Victoria tunnel is raised?
In these times of financial constraint when ever dollar counts, surely this planned second Mt Vic tunnel could be
revisited or adapted rather than starting from scratch. People living in the eastern suburbs of Wellington have
been waiting 50 years for this tunnel. We can't wait another 50 years!!
