CRIMINAL CASES REVIEW COMMISSION – TE KĀHUI TĀTARI TURE
Applications are invited from people wishing to be considered for appointment as either the
Chairperson, or as a member, of the Criminal Cases Review Commission – Te Kāhui
ACT
Tātari Ture (the Commission).
The Criminal Cases Review Commission Act 2019 was passed in November 2019. The
Act established the Commission as an independent Crown entity consisting of a Chief
Commissioner, a Deputy Chief Commissioner and no fewer than 1 but no more than 5
Commissioners.
The purpose of the Commission is to independently review suspected miscarriages of
justice in a timely and transparent manner.
The Act requires:
• At least 1 member must have knowledge or understanding of te ao Māori and tikanga
Māori.
INFORMATION
• At least two-thirds of the members must have experience in working in the criminal
justice system or have other knowledge or expertise relevant to the Commission’s
functions and duties, which may include experience, knowledge, or expertise
acquired overseas.
Candidates for Chairperson need to have career experience at a senior level reflecting
excellent judgement, integrity and impartiality together with an in-depth understanding of
criminal procedure and trial practices. The appointee wil also need strong governance
experience and the ability to provide vision and strategic leadership, and to set clear

policies and priorities.
A member needs a sound understanding of the criminal justice system or other knowledge
or expertise relevant to the Commission’s functions and duties, which may include

experience, knowledge or expertise in the community. They wil also need experience in
a governance role and ideally a broad knowledge and understanding of legal, advocacy or
dispute procedures.
These are part-time roles that require attendance at bi-monthly Commission meetings and
workshops held on alternate months. This involves reading investigation and legal
reviews of cases, guidance on systemic themes and issues arising, direction setting and

feedback on core Crown entity accountability reporting requirements, support and
feedback to the Chief Executive.
Appointments to the Commission are subject to section 32 of the Crown Entities Act 2004,
which states that members of independent Crown entities are appointed for a maximum
term of five years and may be reappointed.
