AVA RAIL BRIDGE WORKS – 24 February to June 2025

Dear neighbour,
We’re writing to let you know that KiwiRail wil  soon be carrying out
essential upgrade work on Ava Rail Bridge.
The work involves:
-  removing and replacing sleepers on the north-bound track
-  removing and replacing rail and fastenings, across the bridge
and on the bridge approaches, on both north-bound and
south-bound tracks
-  replacing the corrosion protection coating for the steel bridge
beams
-  installing emergency access to the structure.
KiwiRail workers and specialist rail-mounted equipment, including
cranes and excavators, wil  be used to complete the works. Trains
will mostly continue as normal.
If you have questions about the works email

Ava Bridge Walkway closing from 24 February 2025
In order to undertake the works, the walkway which is attached to
the railway sleepers needs to be removed. The walkway dates back
to the 1920s and cannot be replaced in its current form. Current
design also means it is also too close to the tracks and does not
provide enough separation between people and trains.
We are mindful that this is well used by locals and Hutt City Council
is considering options for access in the future.
The closest alternative pedestrian access across Hutt River is about
1km away at the Waione Street bridge to the south or Ewan Bridge
to the North.
