Official Information Act request dated 13 January 2025
We refer to your email dated 13 January 2025 requesting information under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). The responses to your specific questions are
set out below.
Request One: Please provide the total cost if any, for onsite te reo Māori lessons year
by year over the last 3 years.
Response One: The total spend on te reo Māori lessons across FY22, FY23 and FY24
was $59,680. This includes lessons run by various providers and includes both face-
to-face and online training.
Determining the cost specifical y for onsite te reo Māori lessons would require
substantial research and collation. A charge for provision would therefore apply, at
an hourly rate of $76 per the Charging Guidelines. Please let us know if you would like
to proceed with this aspect of your request.
Request Two: Please provide the total cost if any for the four-day immersion kura
reo in Rotorua in September 2023 and the names of those who attended.
Response Two: Some TVNZ staff who attend te reo Māori lessons at TVNZ have also
attended an immersion kura reo in Rotorua. Attendance at that course is undertaken
by staff in their personal capacity and is not organised or funded by TVNZ.
TVNZ does not record the personal activities of its staff. No record of the names of
those who attended this course exists, and this aspect of your request is therefore
declined in accordance with section 18(e) of the Act.
Request Three: Please provide the same details if anyone from TVNZ attended a
similar course in 2024.
Response Three: As above, although TVNZ is aware of this course, staff attend in
their personal capacity and the course is not organised or funded by TVNZ. TVNZ
does not hold any record of attendees. This request is therefore declined in
accordance with section 18(e) of the Act.
Request Four: Please provide the data/guidelines/targets used in determining the
amount of te reo Maori that is included in every 1News, 6pm broadcast. e.g. Is it
always the same or are there daily, weekly adjustments made.
Response Four: TVNZ's position on the use of te reo Māori in our news and current
affairs programming is publicly available online at:
https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/08/26/te-reo-maori-in-news-and-current-affairs-at-
te-reo-tataki-tvnz/ and https://corporate.tvnz.co.nz/1news-policies-information/.
Request Five: Who makes the decision and oversees the level of te reo used? Is
there a minimum requirement for each nightly broadcast?
Response Five: As above, TVNZ's position on the use of te reo Māori in our news and
current affairs programming is publicly available online at:
https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/08/26/te-reo-maori-in-news-and-current-affairs-at-
te-reo-tataki-tvnz/ and https://corporate.tvnz.co.nz/1news-policies-information/.
We trust this information assists. If you are dissatisfied with this response, section 28
of the Act sets out the circumstances in which you may make a complaint to the
Ombudsman in order to seek an investigation and review.
Yours sincerely,
