Ms Carole Ritchie
Dear Ms Ritchie
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
Re: animal euthanasia statistics
Please find attached information pertaining to your request about the reporting of euthanasia
of animals in shelters.
Each shelter in New Zealand, whether run by a local council or a welfare organisation, will
have their own processes and policies regarding the euthanasia of animals. While the
National Dog Database records the registration of dogs on a national level, it does not
contain information on the future of that dog. Unfortunately this means that you would need
to collect figures from each individual council and welfare organisation.
Auckland Council releases an Animal Management Annual Report, which includes figures
relating to euthanasia and may help you with the statistics you are looking for. The last four
years of reports are available on our
website. Unfortunately the pending outcomes of dogs in Auckland Council’s care are not made
publicly available to protect the privacy of the dog owners involved, and for the welfare of the
dogs. Please rest assured that any dogs which are unclaimed by their owner, are not of a
menacing breed, and pass a health and temperament test are given every possible
opportunity to find a new home. Euthanasia is always a last resort at Auckland Council, and
in the 2014-15 financial year, over 98% of adoptable dogs found new forever homes.
I trust the information provided will satisfy your requirements, however should you require
any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me on 09 301 0101, quoting Official
Information Request No. 9000136789.
Yours sincerely
