Official information request for average grade and grade distributions for
economics courses
I refer to your request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act)
dated 23 January 2025:
“Please provide the average grade and grade distributions for all 100-300 level
economics courses separated by bachelor (arts or commerce, no conjoint or
science).”
Attached are grade distributions and average grades (based on calculated GPA) for 100-
300 level economics courses for students enrolled in Bachelor of Commerce degrees, and
grade distributions and average grades (based on calculated GPA) for 100 level economics
courses for students enrolled in Bachelor of Arts degrees.
Information regarding grade distributions and average grades for 200 and 300 level
economics courses for students enrolled in Bachelor of Arts degrees cannot be made
available due to low numbers of Bachelor of Arts students enrolled in these courses.
Publication of this information may result in the marks of an identifiable individual being
released. As such, this information is withheld in accordance with s9(2)(a) of the Act in
order to protect the privacy of natural persons.
However, we have included the average grade GPA achieved across all 100-300 level
courses for both Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts students to enable a general
comparison of students enrolled in these courses.
Please note, average grades have been determined based on the calculated grade point
average (GPA) achieved for the course by each student in that course. During this process,
GPA’s may be rounded up or down to the nearest letter grade. More information on
grades and GPA’s is available at
https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/students/study/progress/grades.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of the
decisions made regarding this request. Information about how to make a complaint is
