We refer to your email dated 3 February 2025 requesting information under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). The answers to your specific questions are set
out below.
Request: Under the Official Information Act 1982 I kindly request to see the contractual
agreement made between TVNZ and the Australia & New Zealand Grundy
Entertainment Pty Ltd/Grundy International Operations Ltd for the production of the
television gameshow Wheel of Fortune, which was filmed at the Avalon Television
Studios from 1991-1996, in particular regarding:
- Which party would fund various aspects of the production (including staffing, set
design, and materials)
- How much was paid
- Which party would hold various licensing and copyrights arising from the production
Response: We have searched for readily retrievable information that responds to your
request and identified a production agreement between TVNZ and Grundy
Entertainment Pty Ltd for Series 2 of 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune'. The copyright for
this programme was held by Grundy Entertainment Pty Ltd. We are unable to disclose
further details regarding production of the programme (including funding and
licensing arrangements), as the production agreement obliges TVNZ to keep it
confidential. This information is therefore withheld on the following bases:
• Section 9(2)(b) of the Act: the making available of the information would be
likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who
supplied or who is the subject of the information; and
• Section 9(2)(i) of the Act: to enable TVNZ to carry out, without prejudice or
disadvantage, commercial activities.
Undertaking a ful search for all documentation relating to Wheel of Fortune from 1991
to 1996 would require substantial research and collation. A charge for provision would
therefore apply, at an hourly rate of $76 per the Charging Guidelines. We note that
even if other responsive documentation were to be found, we consider it likely that
such documents would also be confidential, and therefore subject to the same
withholding grounds. Please let us know if you would like to proceed with your request.
