7 February 2025
Tena koutou katoa,
I have mutually agreed with Lester, our Commissioner, to step down early from the role as CEO
of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora effective today, 7 February 2025. Although my term
formally ends in June, Health NZ is at an important point in the Reset where a different
leadership approach is required to take us forward and I would like to make space for that now.
I took on this role in February 2022 as interim CEO and then from 1 July 2022 for a fixed term to
support the shift from our previous DHB environment to a unified healthcare system. I believe
that working together collaboratively to join up and improve the care New Zealanders
experience is an ambition worth working for. New Zealanders deserve the best of what we can
1982
offer as a district, regional and/or national team. All of us can make so much more of a
difference if we can work together better.
Although this will be one of the toughest jobs I have undertaken in my career, I am pleased to
OIA
have played a part in that shift. This role has called on all my 27 years of experience in health
policy, planning and funding, operations and people leadership. It has also called on all my
experience both in hospitals and as funder of primary and community services. There is
the
progress we have made together – we are delivering more care than before to more people both
in our hospitals and in our community and primary care sector.
The best part, however, will have been working with you - colleagues, friends and whanau,
providers and stakeholders - who bring a spirit of service to making a difference for patients,
whanau and communities. It takes a ‘team of teams’ to provide quality and safe health care to
under
New Zealanders and I am proud to have been a part of your team.
Thank you for your support and know that, wherever my next steps take me, I will be your biggest
supporter.
Ngamihi nui,
Fepulea’I Margie Apa

Following this morning’s farewell note from Fepulea’I Margie Apa
I would like to thank Fepulea’I Margie Apa very much for her service to Health New Zealand as
she farewells the organisation today.
Margie has provided myself, as Commissioner, and the three Deputy Commissioners with very
strong support from the day of my appointment as Commissioner. She has an extraordinary
work ethic and has worked extremely hard to support our programme. This can’t have been easy
for Margie as the reset is a significant change in direction from that where Health NZ was
heading but nonetheless, she realigned entirely to the new work programme.
We are very grateful for the support she has provided to us, and we wish her very well as she
leaves Health NZ.
Dr Dale Bramley will become Interim Chief Executive of Health NZ effective today.
