[FYI request #3205 email]
Dear Mr Randle,
Thank you for your email received 8 October 2015, requesting, under the Official Information
Act 1982 (the Act), the following information:
a list of 2013 Census meshblocks and geographic centroid locations that have had the
geographic centroid locations for them calculated
a list of 2013 Census area units and geographic centroid locations that have had the
geographic centroid locations for them calculated
a list of 2013 Census urban areas and geographic centroid locations that have had the
geographic centroid locations for them calculated
a list of 2013 Census territorial authorities and geographic centroid locations that have
had the geographic centroid locations for them calculated.
Statistics NZ has supplied the data requested and accompanying technical notes in the files
listed below:
Statistics NZ_Meshblock_True Centroid_061115.xlsx
Statistics NZ_Area Unit_True Centroid_061115.xlsx
Statistics NZ_Territorial Authority_True Centroid_061115.xlsx
Statistics NZ_Urban Area_True Centroid_061115.xlsx
Statistics NZ_Technical notes_Centroids_061115.docx.
For the purpose of your request, the centroids were calculated as ‘true’ centroids. Please refer
to the technical notes for further details.
Please note that within the urban areas, there are a number of areas for which the use of
centroid is not appropriate. This is where there are a large number of rural centres. Therefore,
Statistics NZ advises that you do not include urban area codes greater than 500 in your
analysis (i.e. '501', '502', '505', '506', '507', '510', and '511'). For more information, please refer
to the following link on the Statistics NZ website:
Classification of urban area.
If you have any further questions relating to the data provided, please contact Statistics NZ’s
Information Centre at
[Statistics New Zealand request email] or on 0508 525 525 toll-free.
You have the right, by way of complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman under section 28(3)
of the Act, to seek an investigation and review of this response to your request.
Statistics NZ intends to publish its response to your request made under the Act on the
Statistics NZ website. This letter, with your personal details removed, will be published in its
entirety. Consistent with the Act, publishing responses increases the availability of information
to the public and helps promote balanced public debate.
Yours sincerely,
