Hi Joe,
Last night when I was out for dinner with some Island Bay friends ( who are cyclists) I heard that quite a few cyclists had identified this particular intersection as dangerous due to lack of visibility at a crucial point where cars are waiting to pull out.
The comment was "most of the cycleway is good, but if there was going to be an accident that would be the place".
Visual clutter was identified as a problem, and I am wondering if the approach to that intersection needs a rethink?
It was always a difficult intersection with poor visibility before the cycleway too.
Regards,
Sarah Free

Hi Councillor,
in general at intersections I don’t think so – the problem seems to be illegal parking (people parking where they should not). If they park in marked spaces, then visibility should be good. Clearly, it is an option to take out more parking, but I’m not sure what the particular circumstances are that requires this at intersections. New markings and posts will soon be installed which should stop this inconsiderate parking.
Kind regards, Joe

Is there a need to take out more car parks to ensure greater visibility?

Hi Councillor Free
Thank you for bringing the crash to our attention. We hadn’t been notified about it. I’ll follow up with the Police and get more details, if it was reported.
We have noted that cars sometimes park in places where they shouldn’t, particularly on the east side approaching Mersey and Tamar Streets where we currently have painted kerb extensions. Instructions have been issued to paint yellow no stopping lines in these and similar locations to clearly convey to drivers not to park illegally. We expect these markings to be put in next week along with a little more green surfacing and about 30 safety posts in particular higher risk areas.
Kind regards, Joe

Subject: Cycling Accident in Island Bay
Hi Joe,
Just to let you know if you haven't already heard, that there was an accident down in Island Bay yesterday evening, a car turning into Mersey street collided with a cyclist. The cyclist ended up in A&E with a sore shoulder.
Not sure of the details, but it seems visibility may have been an issue.
There have been lots of complaints by residents that visibility at intersections isn't good, because cyclists are obscured by parked cars, until they emerge from behind them, by which stage cars are already turning.
Anecdotally there are also lots of reports of near misses.
Warm regards,
Sarah Free
