[FYI request #6288 email] Dear Gavin
OFFICIAL INFORMATION REQUEST FOR COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH MAYOR MIKE
TANA
I refer to your official information request dated 28 July 2017 relating to relocation of Mayor
Mike Tana’s family to Porirua and Council costs associated with the Mayor’s Office.
The information you have requested is provided below, with the questions you specified
included as numbered headings in bold.
1.
When will Mrs Tana and the family relocate to Porirua, as promised by Mr Tana in
his pre election speeches?
This is not information the Council holds. I suggest you contact Mayor Mike Tana in
person if you want personal information of this nature.
2.
As Mr Tana is commuting between Porirua and Rotorua regularly, who is paying
for those travel expenses?
Mr Tana makes his own travel arrangements for his personal travel. Occasionally he
uses the car provided for him as part of his Mayoral remuneration. He is entitled to use
this for private use.
3.
If this is the Porirua City Council, how much has been spent on those travel
expenses since October 2016 when he was elected?
We have assessed personal use of the Mayor’s vehicle at less than 20% of the costs
incurred as part of his remuneration package. We do not itemise individual trips.
4.
How many people are working in the Mayoral office providing support services?
The Mayor currently has a secretary on permanent staff and two part-time consultants
on fixed term providing support services.
5.
What is the role of Frank Hughes (?) who has recently joined the office?
Mr Hughes is engaged as an advisor for the Mayor. His particular tasks are to:
a. work with the Mayor to develop his strategic priorities for the triennium;
b. develop a stakeholder framework that supports these priorities; and
c. work with the Mayor through the Long-term Plan process to realise these
aspirations.

6.
What are his business qualifications for his role supporting Mr Tana?
Mr Hughes has a private sector background and was recommended for this role
because of his skil s in strategy and operations. This includes 35 years’ experience in
the areas of information technology, business improvement, sales, marketing,
organisational strategy and more recently consulting for a range of organisations.
7.
Is he a full time employee or a consultant contractor?
Mr Hughes is a contractor.
8.
Who is paying his salary or consultancy fees?
Porirua City Council is paying Mr Hughes’ fees.
