STANDARD
Compliance with NZS 8134.2:2008 Health and Disability Services (Restraint Minimisation
and Safe Practice) Standards
To ensure all Bay of Plenty District Health Board (BOPDHB) clinical staff dealing with
patients practice competent, safe care in relation to restraint minimisation, always
considering the least restrictive interventions, and appreciating the physical and
psychological impact restraint has on the individual consumer, their family / whanāu and
others.

FREQUENCY
1. Initial introduction session on restraint minimisation is required for all staff.
2. Three (3) yearly update is available via
Midland Learning, e-learning site.
3. Orientation training sessions are available monthly in Tauranga and bi-monthly in
Whakatane.
STANDARDS TO BE MET
1. Content
1.1 All clinical and relevant non-clinical staff e.g. security and orderlies, will complete a
self-directed learning package (SDLP) or resource pack.
1.2 The SDLP is available on-line vi
a Midland Learning, e-learning site. 1.3 Course content, the SDLP, the resource pack and test will be reviewed annually by
Practice of Restraint Advisory Group (PRAG).
2. Records
2.1 Individual staff members are responsible for attending trainings and required updates.
2.2 Individual staff members are responsible for their personal record keeping for
professional portfolio / certification purposes
2.3 All training records are held within the Human Resource Information System (HRIS).
