I refer to your email dated 12 January 2018, received in our office 15 January 2018, requesting the
following information under section 12 of the Official Information Act from West Coast DHB.
1. Bed occupancy rates at the public hospital/hospitals from July 2007 to June 2016. Please note
that I would like monthly data on this. However, if monthly data is not available, please specify
the reason. If monthly data is unavailable, the next preference will be quarterly data, if
quarterly is not available then I will accept half-yearly. Furthermore, as last resort yearly data. I
am also willing to accept data on bed occupancy rates at random intervals within a year.
Please find attached as
Appendix 1 a table of average monthly occupancy for each of our hospital
facilities for the periods 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2016 as requested. This data excludes occupancy for
long-stay age care residents that have at times been co-located on our acute service hospital
campuses.
Please note that ward configurations as well as available and resourced bed numbers at all three of
our hospitals have varied over the years of your request period. Excluding long-stay beds for age
residential care, we currently generally resource and operate 62 inpatient beds at Grey Base Hospital
(including medical, surgical, maternity and acute mental health beds, but excluding Day Unit beds);
three inpatient general medical beds at Reefton; and 12 inpatient beds (including medical and
maternity) at Buller.
