Re: Official Information Act Request Please find the information below in response to your request under the Official
Information Act to provide you with information about the gender-affirming healthcare
services provided by the Waikato District Health Board.
You requested whether the following gender-affirming healthcare serves are funded
by the DHB for transgender patients, and whether the services are currently
available.
Hormone therapy
Yes. Hormone therapy is funded as prescribed by general practitioners and
those medications which are specialist only are prescribed by the relevant
consultant at the sexual health clinic or endocrinologist.
Mastectomy
Generally these patients do not meet the clinical access criteria for
mastectomy, although occasionally this has been over ridden due to specific
aspects of an individual’s case.
Hysterectomy
These patients do not typically meet clinical access criteria for
hysterectomies, which means access to surgery in public hospitals is limited.
Orchiectomy
No. These patients do not meet the clinical access criteria.
Facial hair removal
No services are available for the client group.
Breast augmentation
No services are available for the client group.
Voice training
No services are available for the client group.
Is any period of real life experience required to access surgery?
Real life experience is not required for gender affirming surgery in Waikato.
Does the Waikato DHB currently fund patients to travel to other areas to
access health care?
No, as the service is available locally.
