Dear Mr Singh,
Official Information Act (1982) Request
I write in response to your Official Information Act Request, dated 18 June 2018. You requested the
following information in two separate requests on the same day; therefore, this response addresses
both submitted questions, and has been provided by our clinical team in Women’s Health and Kidz First:
1. For medicina brands ENFit Enteral Syringe (non-reusable Syringe) for Nasogastric milk feeding:
•
Cost of a 20ML ENFit Enteral Syringe (Medicina non reusable):
These items are supplied for the DHB at a unit cost of 0.6 cents each
.
•
Current stock levels:
For most clinical supplies, our supply levels are managed via HealthAlliance procurement system
on behalf of the regional DHBs. Levels at each clinical unit/ ward are intended to ensure we have
a match of supply to clinical demand levels. There will be fluctuations of stock at times for a
variety of reasons in the supply chain.
•
Usage Guidelines
We have no specific clinical guidelines documented for the usage of oral syringes, other than an
overriding clinical policy that anything given orally must be administered using equipment that
is defined for oral use. This includes having a stock of the necessary oral and/or enteral syringes,
and correct storage and labelling of stock as “For oral/enteral use only” in the medication room
on unit/ ward.
2. Is there any usage limit per New Born or preterm baby for using Medicina brand's ENFit Enteral
Syringe (non-reusable) for Nasogastric milk feedings in NICU, SCBU or Maternity wards?
The oral syringes are a single-patient use item, and there are no limits to their daily use by a baby. Clinical
assessment of a baby’s particular nutritional and feeding needs will inform the requirements.
