Status of Locomotives
Currently 25 DC/DCP locomotives are still used in daily service with original build dates (as DA
locomotives) between 1961 and 1967. Conversion to DC occurred at Clyde Engineering for 24 of the
units and Hutt for a single unit of those remaining.
The units are spread around the country with the largest single group in the South Island where they
are used for local services in and around Christchurch and Dunedin, along with secondary services on
the Main South Line.
In the North Island, through the Lower North Island, they are used for local services radiating from
Palmerston North, along with secondary services between Wellington and the Taranaki Region.
The Upper North Island has local services around Whangarei, Auckland and Hamilton. Throughout
the entire network the DCs are used as Work Trains.
