Dear Stuart,
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email to the New Zealand Police on 27 August 2018 requesting information under
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). On 4 September 2018, the NZ Police transferred the
following part of your request to the NZ Transport Agency for response:
“… The total number of road col isions reported, 2016, 2017 and 2018 to date
- the total number of collisions attributable to mobile phone use whilst driving, 2016, 2017,
2018 to date.”
The information you have requested is provided in the following tables. It is important to note that
because multiple factors may contribute to a crash, it is incorrect to state that all of the crashes in
Table 2 were caused by cell phone use.

It is important to consider the following about this data:
•
This data is provided from the road traffic crash database; Crash Analysis System (CAS) and is
current as at 17 September 2018; crash data for 2018 is not for a complete calendar year.
•
Due to the Police reporting time frame and subsequent data processing there is a lag from the
time of a crash to full and correct crash records within CAS.
•
Data is for all Police reported crashes involving cell phones (factor 359 within CAS).
•
Traffic crash data covers all NZ roadways or places where the public have legal access with a
motor vehicle.
•
Due to the nature of non-fatal crashes it is believed that these are under-reported; the level of
under-reporting decreases with the severity of the crash.
If you would like to discuss this reply with the NZ Transport Agency, please contact Louisa Bloomer,
Manager, Statistical Analysis, by email to [email address] or by phone on (04) 897 4649.
Yours sincerely
