America's Cup Funding
Thank you for your request for information which we received on 9 December 2018,
concerning America’s Cup Funding. Your requests and our response are set out separately
below.
1. Please provide the entire business case or cases behind any and all funding
from Auckland Council or its subsidiary organisations for the next America's
Cup 2021. Could this also please include any internal supporting data behind
the decision to fund this event.
Auckland Council is yet to complete a formal business case for its investment in
hosting the America’s Cup in 2021.
We can confirm that the decision to fund the infrastructure to enable Auckland to host
the America’s Cup was made by Auckland Council Governing Body. Provided below,
in chronological order, are links to all relevant papers considered by the Governing
Body in reaching its decision, including all agendas (reports) and minutes (decisions).
These papers include the council’s subsidiary organisations.

2. The economic benefit of the event has been estimated by government at
between $500 mil ion and $1 bil ion. Was this estimate produced from council
data? If so, could you please provide the data behind this estimate, if any?
The Government, through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
(MBIE), commissioned a high-level economic assessment evaluation of the 36th
America’s Cup from specialist consultant Market Economics Limited.
The estimate was not produced from Auckland Council data.
The final Market Economics Limited ‘36th America’s Cup: High Level Economic
Assessment Evaluation (Amended)’ dated 18 December 2017 is
