Weed control in Auckland
I refer to your request, which we received on 10 August 2020, about weed control.
I also refer to my email to you on 07 September 2020, extending the timeframe for
us to respond to your request. Thank you for your patience while we have worked on
this response.
Weed Management is completed within the road corridor for the following outcomes:
- Ensure vegetation growing in the kerb and channel and open water channels
does not interfere with water flow.
- Maintain the safety of pedestrians and road users by maintaining clear sight
lines of street signage, reflective marker posts and minor streetscape assets
as well as at intersections and roundabouts
- Control plant pests in accordance with the requirements of the Regional Pest
Management Plan.
- Maintain the streetscape in a tidy and aesthetically pleasing condition.
- Prevent root intrusion causing damage to the road surface, kerb and channel,
footpaths, and other road assets
- Maintain horizontal and vertical clearances over the road carriageway and
footpaths
Auckland’s moderate and wet climate makes the area particularly vulnerable to the
detrimental effects of weeds. The climate causes vigorous growth, easy
establishment, and increased infestation of weeds. The road corridor provides a
dynamic environment for the spread of weeds including through vehicle and water
dispersal.
Since 2019, Auckland Council has undertaken the maintenance of the green spaces
within the road corridor, under contract to and on behalf of Auckland Transport.

We are unable to breakdown this information by year, however the number of

2.the annual invoiced cost for weed and vegetation control for each area.
The amount invoiced is outcome-based, therefore there is no budget line for specific
tasks, such as weed management in the road corridor.
Auckland Council invoiced Auckland Transport in the 2019/2020 financial year the
sum of $9.5m for reimbursement of the Streetscape maintenance including mowing,
litter collection, town centre cleaning and weed vegetation control across Auckland.
3.the annual totals of the following chemicals (as active ingredient) used in each
area for your weed and vegetation control: glyphosate, metsulfuran methyl
(meturon), organosilicone, diethanol condensate (fatty acid) & any other
significant chemical.
The information you have requested on annual totals is being collated to be
published later this year. We are therefore refusing this part of your request under
section 17(d) of the LGOIMA on the basis that the information will soon be publicly
available.
The decision by Auckland Council to release the information contained in this
response was made by Jennifer Rose, Head of Business and Performance -
Community Facilities.
I hope you find this information useful. Should you believe Auckland Council has not
responded appropriately to your request you have the right to seek a review of the
decision from the Ombudsman.
If you have any further queries please contact me on 09 301 0101, quoting LGOIMA
