Whenuakite 2019 aerial 1080 operation - approval from iwi

Wendy Pond made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation

The request was partially successful.

From: Wendy Pond

Dear Department of Conservation,

I have received a copy of the form submitted by Department of Conservation DOC Hauraki (Thames office) to Waikato District Health Board seeking permission for the Whenuakite 2019 aerial 1080 operation. I have also received the communication logs for this application.

1. The application from DoC lists some iwi as being consulted. Please clarify: Which Maori groups gave their consent and approval for the aerial 1080 operation to poison the Whenuakite Public Conservation forest in 2019?

2. Please provide all documentation confirming the consent of these groups to the aerial 1080 operation to poison the Whenuakite forest in 2019. Please do not redact the name of the person who signed a statement of consent, as I wish to confirm that the approval came from an acknowledged kaumatua or kuia.

3. Which Maori group did DoC recognise as the tangata whenua of the Whenuakite Public Conservation land for the purpose of the 2019 poisoning operation?

4. Which tangata whenua were included in the planning and design phase of the operation prior to DoC lodging the operation plan? Please provide evidence of their participation.

Yours faithfully,

Wendy Pond

To followers of this request for Information concerning Whenuakite consultation: a response is included in DOC's reply to my request for the Moehau and Papaakai operation plans of 2013 and 2017. Or you can ask Department of Conservation for DOC6411017, 30 October 2020. The response from DOC records that some iwi with Trust Boards that support the use of poisons were consulted and some hapū opposed to poisoning wildlife habitat were not consulted. That is, "consultation" was selective and options for how to reduce animals unwanted by the govt were not given to anybody. Regards, Wendy Pond

Department of Conservation, under section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act your assumed extension expired October 2020.
How can DoC feasibly claim Iwi approvals were given, the necessary consents were sought & required permissions given, without providing evidence as requested here under the Act.
Were ANY & ALL affected landowners given the appropriate opportunity to consent or object?
How can DoC justify the 2021 proposed 1080 aerial poison drops on the Coromandel Peninsula without providing evidence the required permissions of ANY and ALL affected persons & or landowners have been sought & obtained?
DoC please respond.
