I refer to your emails of 23 October 2020 and 29 January 2021 for
information concerning the number of students awaiting responses from the
University’s Discipline Committee for Semester One 2020 examinations.
Unfortunately, your email of 23 October 2020 was mistakenly filed with the
request of 20 October 2020 from the fyi.org.nz username “C. McCormick”
which was marked as completed following the University’s response to that
request on 17 November 2020. We apologise for this administrative error.

 

The information requested is provided below. Please note that all
references to academic misconduct in examinations relate to the Semester
One 2020 examinations.

 

“Under the Official Information Act, we request the following information
regarding decisions of the Disciplinary Committee relating to exams taken
by students in Semester One 2020:”

 

(1) Confirmation of the number of students who have been referred to the
Disciplinary Committee for allegations of plagiarism and/or academic
misconduct.

Zero students were referred to the Discipline Committee for Category 2
academic misconduct in examinations. Three students were referred to the
Discipline Committee for review of Examination Manager decisions on
Category 1 academic misconduct in examinations.

 

(2) A breakdown as to how many students have been found guilty of
plagiarism and/or academic misconduct (all classifications), and how many
have been found not guilty.
As of the date of this response, two of the students who were referred to
Discipline Committee for review were found “not proven” on review.

 

(3) The number of appeals made by students against a finding of plagiarism
and/or academic misconduct.
Zero students have applied for review of Category 2 academic misconduct in
examinations decisions. 31 review applications were made for Category 1
academic misconduct in examinations decisions.

 

(4) The number of students who are awaiting decisions of their initial
hearing, or of their appeal, at the time of your response to this request.

Zero students are awaiting initial decisions. Two students are awaiting
decisions in relation to the review of a Category 1 academic misconduct in
examinations decision. Four students have received extensions to
amend/finalise their applications for review of Category 1 academic
misconduct in examinations decisions.
