Use of Bloodproducts
Alastair JL made this Official Information request to Auckland District Health Board
The request was successful.
From: Alastair JL
Dear Auckland District Health Board,
The New Zealand medical system makes use of a large number of products derived from donated human blood. I would like to like to ask some questions about the use of these blood products, within the scope of the Official Information Act.
1) At the point of donation, blood is divided into whole blood, plasma, and platelet donation. My understanding is that by the time of use, blood is divided into more and/or different categories by the point of use. Is this correct? What are the blood products/categories relevant at the point of use?
2) Within the Auckland region, how many units of each blood product were used between January 1st 2020 and the end of December 2020? (If some other time window is more easily avaliable, any time window longer than 3 months and within the last 3 years is of equal interest)
3) For the same time window as above, how many of each end product were used by each hospital? Are any used outside the public hospital system, and if so, how are these distributed.
4) How many units of each blood product were used by each department of Middlemore Hospital (over the same time window as used in the above questions)? Alternatively, if data is more available on a ward by ward basis, or at some other meaningful scale that I have not asked about here, then whatever level of granularity is most readily available would be appreciated.
In any of the above, if I have accidentally asked a question which is hard to answer, but is in some sense equivalent to some more easily answered question (different time window, slightly different level of granularity, etc etc), then by all means, provide the more easily collated information (so long as it still provides meaningfully similar information).
Thank you for your time, and any information you can provide,
Alastair JL

Dear Alastair
Re: Official Information Request - Use of blood products
I am writing to acknowledge your official information request dated 25 February 2021.
We will endeavour to respond to your request as soon as possible and, in any event, no later than 25 March 2021. We will contact you if an extension is required.
Currently Auckland DHB and Auckland Regional Public Health Service are receiving a number of COVID related Official Information Act requests, at a time when the staff who would be able to inform a response are committed to the national rollout of the COVID vaccine. This may mean that responding to your request within the statutory 20 day period will be compromised.
Please note that, like other DHBs across New Zealand, Auckland DHB has adopted a model of proactive disclosure which sees OIA responses publically available on our website approximately one month after they have been released. If you believe that there are any special reasons why proactive disclosure should not apply to our response to you, we will be happy to consider this.
Regards.

Auckland DHB has redirected me to NZ blood service (and done so very promptly). I'm not exactly sure how to indicate that a transfer in the current standard menu (Its sort of a mix between "They don't have it" and "Still waiting"), but that's where we are at right now.
