Dear Kaipara District Council,
-Where does kaipara district council provide kerbside recycling via its
contractor to in the district as Kaipara Refuse and KDCs website differ in
there locations. – Mangawhai, Paparoa, Whakapirau, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka,
Baylys Beach, Te Kopuru, Ruawai and Dargaville. As mentioned further down
the contractors will endeavour to pick up yellow bags put out in other
areas but can’t guarantee it won’t be treated as rubbish.
-Do rural areas have access to recycling at the roadside or are the yellow
bags just sent to landfill with the green refuse bags in rural areas each
week – Most rural areas don’t have guaranteed assess to recycling kerbside
collection. When a letter goes out about any changes regarding
collections, rural people are advised this as only the refuse truck goes
into these area’s and that there is only limited space on the truck for
the separation of recycling bags. Once this space is full the bags go
into the general refuse area, this is a risk that they know about. The
other option is that yellow bags can be taken to the transfer station for
free or people can drop their recycling for $2 per load.
-Who are the councils rubbish contractors in rural areas is this still
kaipara refuse? – Yes, currently Kaipara Refuse Ltd is our sole refuse
collection contractor.
-Does council have amounts that are recycled annually in the district
including a breakdown of products such as glass and paper that are
recycled, if so can that be released – Yes we do, and this can be released
if requested. The total figures are reported in the Annual Report which
will be available on the our website once it has been adopted by Council.
-Are recycled any raw materials such as aluminium and glass etc. sent
overseas from the kaipara district – All recycled products collected in
the Kaipara are initially processed by KDC’s contractor and then sold to
markets in NZ.
-Are there any future plans for kerbside recycling in the district that
have been finalised? – In year 2 of the upcoming LTP (22/23) there will be
a targeted rate introduced to cover recycling costs, Council is still
finalising what this new service will look like.
Yours faithfully,
Mike Hunua
