Whangarei District Council
Dear Mike Hunua
I refer to your official information request of 12^th June 2021 [reference
COP003342] seeking information on Recycling in Whangarei District.
Your request was referred to council’s Parks Department for consideration
and the answers to each of your questions are as follows:
Q1 How many tonnes of recycling or collected and processed annually in the
Whangarei district from the kerbside collections.
6500 tonnes were collected from kerbside collections in Whangarei in 2020.
This material was sent to Auckland for processing.
Q2 Can you break down how much of each product, such as aluminium and
glass is recycled.
Approximately 60% of the weight of material is glass. 20% is paper and
card. Other products (plastic type 1 and 2, steel and aluminium cans) are
sorted in Auckland and we do not know the composition.
Q3 Are any raw recycled materials from the Whangarei district sent
overseas for recycling such as glass, metals, plastic etc.
Glass is used for new bottles by Visy in Auckland. Visy process the other
materials and may sell them overseas.
Q4 Does Whangarei district have any finalised future plans for recycling
in the district.
The Whangarei Waste Management and Minimisation Plan sets out our aims and
objectives for waste management in the district. The plan is available
from our website:
[1]https://www.wdc.govt.nz/Council/Council-...
Q5 Has the 2 bin system of glass only and others for kerbside recycling in
the district had any financial, environmental or logisticial advantages or
disadvantages since being introduced in the district.
The addition of the 2^nd bin has made sorting the material easier and
safer for the collection crews. It has increased the capacity for
householders to recycle at the kerbside.
I hope this information is of some assistance in responding to your
request. If you believe we have not responded appropriately to your
request, you have the right by way of complaint, under section 27(3) of
the Act, to apply to the Ombudsman to seek an investigation and review of
the decision.
kind regards
Sue Hodge
