Grade Distribution for all law papers

JB made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was successful.

From: JB

Dear University of Otago,

I am making an OIA request for a spreadsheet or document containing confirmed grades of all students taking Law papers 2021. This need not contain further data other than their overall grades.

To clarify, I am asking for the specific grade percentage, not merely the grade letter.

Yours faithfully,

JB

We acknowledge receipt of your Official Information Act request.

Can we please clarify the scope of your request. Are you requesting information in relation to the compulsory papers only, or are you wanting information for both the compulsory papers and the elective papers offered in 2021? What levels do you require - 100, 200, 300, 400 or all levels?

We note that there are large number of law papers that were offered last year.

We will wait to hear from you before we continue to process your request.

I refer to your information request dated 5 February 2022 and clarified 8
February 2022, made under the Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You
have requested grade breakdowns of all 300 and 400 level LAWS papers in
2021.

Subject to the comments below, please find attached the information you
have requested.

o For privacy and student wellbeing reasons, we have withheld the lowest
failing mark (where applicable) for each paper. Revealing these marks
would provide personal information about the lowest failing mark a
student in the class could have achieved. We therefore withhold this
information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act, and we do not
consider that the reasons for withholding this information are
outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable in
the public interest to make the information available.

o It is the also the University’s standard practice to not report on
marks which relate to less than 5 students where we consider that such
disclosure could affect an individual’s privacy and wellbeing. Where
the numbers are very low, there is a risk that the identity of these
students could be determined/inferred, and that their personal
information (i.e. their grades) could be revealed. We note that where
the grade is Fail D or Fail E, where there are less than 5 students we
have indicated this using <5 – again to protect the privacy and
wellbeing of these students pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.

o Students who withdrew from LAWS papers are excluded from the data.

o Students with a result of Compensation Pass
([1]https://www.otago.ac.nz/courses/qualific...)
or Aegrotat
([2]https://www.otago.ac.nz/study/exams/otag...) are
excluded from the data.

o The data excludes papers where either a pass or fail result is given
(not a grade). These papers are LAWS398, LAWS498 and LAWS499.

We trust that this information will be helpful.

We note your right to seek a review of these decisions via a complaint to
an Ombudsman. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any
concerns with you first.

Ngā mihi

Kelsey
