Dear Amber,
I refer to parts 1, 5, 5a, 5b, and 5d of your request of 14 March 2022 to
Auckland District Health Board, transferred to the University of Auckland
under section 14 of the OIA. The University's response follows.
“With regards to general medicine and pediatrics departments.
1) what is the list if senior medical officers designated to be clinical
supervisors for medical students from the university if Auckland (i.e. who
are the SMOs who can sign CSRs)”
See the attached Excel document.
“With regards to trainee interns
5) how many hours per week are trainee interns expected to be on placement
in runs above?”
36 hours, Monday to Friday 0800-1600 less one half day study leave,
includes clinical placements, tutorials and other educational activities
“5a) as they are not paid, what protections are ensured trainee interns
have proper rest and food breaks?”
Lunch and refreshment breaks are taken with junior doctors on medical
teams.
“5b) how many days in a row are trainee interns expected to be on
placement”
Usually 4 ½ days. Trainee interns are expected to attend on two weekend
days during some hospital placements, with the maximum equivalent of 4
weekends during the year. Trainee interns may themselves choose to split
weekend days (with a maximum 5 1/2 days on placement in a row) or attend
both days in the one weekend (with a maximum 4 1/2 + 2 +4 1/2 = 11 days).
“5d) how does dhb manage the expectations for trainee interns to be
present with their health and wellbeing in a demanding field”
Trainee interns are under the jurisdiction of the University not the DHBs.
The University, and the medical programme in particular, have a clear
framework on Where to seek Help, accessible on the MBChB Portal,
