What is the living wage?
The living wage is the amount of hourly pay a worker would need to earn in order to pay for the necessities of life and participate as an active citizen in the community.
NZ Living Wage for 2021: $22.75
In New Zealand the Living Wage is calculated on 1 September each year by the New Zealand Family Centre Social Policy Unit, and is intended to represent the wage that's required for workers to cover their basic living expenses including food, accommodation and transportation.

3. This is being treated as an Official Information request, and as
such, Council must meet certain criteria in how and when we respond to
you, set out in the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act
1987.
4. Your request has been provided to the relevant officers for follow
up. You will be advised of Council’s decision as soon as is reasonably
possible, and no later than 20 working days from the date we received your
request, unless we have agreed an extension to that time frame with you
before the due date.

1. Further to your request for information dated 15 June 2022,
regarding the Living wage for staff, we are now able to provide you with
Napier City Council’s response.
2. You requested:
a) Do the Council pay all their staff at least the current living wage
of $22.75 an hour?

c) If the Council don't pay the staff the living wage, what are your
reasons?

In New Zealand the Living Wage is calculated on 1 September each year by
the New Zealand Family Centre Social Policy Unit, and is intended to
represent the wage that's required for workers to cover their basic living
expenses including food, accommodation and transportation.
3. Response:
a) No.
b) 179 people were paid below $22.75 per hour.
c) We currently use Strategic Pay methodology to evaluate all of our
roles. The evaluation provides us with the grade to pay the role and we
use local government strategic pay median salary tables to then determine
the amount to pay.
Our current policy is to pay the individual between 85% to 102% of the
grade moving employees through the grade to achieve at least 98% of the
grade when they become fully competent in the role.
