BPharm(Hons)

Ms Kim made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Ms Kim to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Ms Kim

Dear University of Auckland,

On the University of Auckland website (here: https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/study/stud...) under entry requirements, it lists that "Entry into the BPharm(Hons) is very competitive; only 10 students per year will be accepted into the programme." This limit of 10 students into the BPharm(Hons) program is also stated in the University of Auckland programme limitations (Limitations Schedule A).

However, looking at the University of Auckland graduation database, it is clear that the number of students who graduate with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) [BPharm(Hons)] exceeds the 10 students limit.

For instance, in 2020, according to the graduate database, all 85 students who graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, was awarded a class of honours. Similarly, in 2020, according to the graduate database, of the 93 students, who graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, 89 students was awarded a class of honours.

In both years the number of students graduating with a BPharm(Hons) degree exceeds the 10 student limit.

Can the University of Auckland please provide the following information:

(1) Why in each of the year (2020 and 2019) did the number of students who graduated with a BPharm(Hons) degree exceed the limit of 10 students?

(2) Given the large number of graduates who do end up graduating with a BPharm(Hons) degree, can the university confirm that such a limitation of only allowing 10 students to enrol into the BPharm(Hons) program been repealed?

(3) If so, reasons as to why the limit of 10 students into the BPharm(Hons) is no longer enforced given that its clearly stipulated on the University of Auckland Limitations Schedule A? and whether any correction will be made on the University of Auckland's webpages?

Yours faithfully,

Ms Kim

Dear Ms Kim,

I refer to your request of 5 August 2022. The University’s response
follows.

“On the University of Auckland website (here:
[1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/study/stud...)
under entry requirements, it lists that "Entry into the BPharm(Hons) is
very competitive; only 10 students per year will be accepted into the
programme." This limit of 10 students into the BPharm(Hons) program is
also stated in the University of Auckland programme limitations
(Limitations Schedule A).”

This is correct.

“However, looking at the University of Auckland graduation database, it is
clear that the number of students who graduate with a Bachelor of Pharmacy
(Honours) [BPharm(Hons)] exceeds the 10 students limit.

For instance, in 2020, according to the graduate database, all 85 students
who graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, was awarded a class of
honours. Similarly, in 2020, according to the graduate database, of the 93
students, who graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, 89 students
was awarded a class of honours.”

“Honours” has meant two different things in relation to tertiary
qualifications. The first (historical) type of Honours is where a degree
is awarded with a class of Honours purely on the basis of academic
achievement in the degree. The second type is where the degree is a named
Honours degree, such as the LLB (Hons), which requires additional courses
to those required for the regular degree.

The named honours degree “Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)” is a new degree
that includes 700-level courses. It is this degree that has 2023
admissions limited to 10 students. The New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) required the BPharm with Hons (no 700 level papers) to be
converted to a BPharm (Hons) with 700 level papers.

“(1) Why in each of the year (2020 and 2019) did the number of students
who graduated with a BPharm(Hons) degree exceed the limit of 10 students?”

No students graduated from the BPharm (Hons) degree in 2019 and 2020 – as
that degree did not yet exist. Students graduated from the BPharm degree
in 2019 and 2020 with a class of honours – e.g. “Bachelor of Pharmacy with
First Class Honours”, “Bachelor of Pharmacy with Second Class Honours
Second Division”.

“(2) Given the large number of graduates who do end up graduating with a
BPharm(Hons) degree, can the university confirm that such a limitation of
only allowing 10 students to enrol into the BPharm(Hons) program been
repealed?”

“(3) If so, reasons as to why the limit of 10 students into the
BPharm(Hons) is no longer enforced given that its clearly stipulated on
the University of Auckland Limitations Schedule A? and whether any
correction will be made on the University of Auckland's webpages? “

These questions are based on misconceptions – see the explanation provided
above.

Yours sincerely,

Landon Watt
