Your Official Information Act request reference: HNZ00009495
Thank you for your email on 10 January 2023, asking for the following information which has
been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). Please see outlined below
a response to each part of your request.
“Could you please supply the following information which could be sourced from your maternity
claims data. Monthly Data from 01/01/19 through to 31/12/22

Spontaneous Miscarriages
Te Whatu Ora does not have complete information about the number of spontaneous miscarriages
in New Zealand. We receive records from hospitals when someone is admitted and requires
treatment for a miscarriage. However, many people do not require hospital-level care for a
miscarriage. This means the information we could provide about miscarriages would not be
complete. As such, I am unable to provide data for spontaneous miscarriages under section
18(g)(i) of the Act as the information is not held by Te Whatu Ora or any other agency subject to
the Act.

When considering the data, it is important to note:
• The maternity and mortality datamarts currently only provide data up to 2020. More recent
information is not yet available.
• The NMDS currently contains complete maternity data up to and including 2021.
• As the hospitalizations data (NMDS) is a count of discharges, patients who have been
hospitalized more than once (due to transfers, readmissions, or repeated incidents) are
recorded each time, and wil appear in the data more than once.
