Official Information Act request: Fines information
Thank you for your email of 15 May 2023, regarding clarification on a previous response
provided to you by the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry) on 15 May 2023. Specifically, you
requested:
The tables which you have supplied only show the 2 aggregations independently - I
would like to see this data in a way that shows both aggregations at once (for example
so I can understand how many of the 1,646,642 fines in the $100-$500 grouping in the
2021-22 year have current vs not current addresses).
Can you please also clarify if your information sharing processes are two way - in
particular, when you are advised that a address is not current, do you then share this
information with the prosecuting authority so they can mark it as such in their system?
Your request has been referred to me for response, as it falls within my responsibilities as
Acting Group Manager, National Service Delivery and is being managed in accordance with
the provisions of the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
In response to your first question, please see table 1 which shows the breakdown of the
original data provided to you on 15 May 2023. This table contains data drawn from a
database that is subject to change, as new data is continually recorded and/or recoded.
In response to your second question, when the Ministry receives returned fines letters with
an address that is not current, the prosecuting authority is not advised of this, as it is the
individual’s responsibility to update the relevant agency with any changes to their details.
If you require any further information, please contact Media & Social Media Manager Joe
Locke at [email address].
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at: justice.govt.nz/about/official-information-act-requests/oia-responses/.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to make a complaint to the
Of ice of the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. The Office of the Ombudsman may
be contacted by email to [email address] or by phone on 0800 802 602.
