Disability access to transport during the 2nd bustastrophe
J Smith made this Official Information request to Wellington Regional Council
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for J Smith to read recent responses and update the status.
From: J Smith
Dear Wellington Regional Council,
This evening on the 2162 bus, I witnessed a person being told by the driver that they couldn't board the bus as they were using a walking frame. The driver told them they couldn't take people with walkers when people were standing on the bus. The hopeful commuter was left standing in the rain, hoping that another bus would appear in the following few hours. The bus then picked up another ten non-disabled people at the next stop.
As I am a regular bus user, I have witnessed several incidences this year where people with visible disabilities were unable to board buses due to overcrowding.
I'm assuming that Wellington Regional Council has a mechanism in the contracts with the bus companies to report these incidents. This would be a standard clause in any service the disability community relies on.
Therefore, I am asking for the total number of reported incidences of people with disability equipment, such as walkers or wheelchairs, being denied use of Wellington buses since January 1 2023.
Yours faithfully,
J Smith
