Grade distribution request
BR made this Official Information request to University of Otago
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for BR to read a recent response and update the status.
From: BR
Dear University of Otago,
I am requesting the grade distribution of SOCI305: Family Demography for semester 1 2023 (this semester that has just been). I am requesting every individual grade number not merely the grade letter of every student enrolled in the course.
Yours faithfully,
BR

We refer to your information request dated 23 June 2023 made under the
Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You have requested "the grade
distribution of SOCI305: Family Demography for semester 1 2023" and
specifically "every individual grade number not merely the grade letter of
every student enrolled in the course".
We have decided to grant your request, subject to the following comments:
o we note that the grade distribution for SOCI305 for Semester 1 2023
has not been finalised yet – as there are special examinations that
are still being completed. Once special examinations have taken place
for this paper and all student results have been finalised, we will be
happy to release the grade distribution for this paper to you. We are
not comfortable releasing the grade distributions for papers before
all special examination results have been confirmed – as this may
affect students’ wellbeing and disrupt students’ performance in the
special examinations. We also want to ensure that we are providing the
full and complete mark and grade distributions for this paper.
o where fewer than five students have failed a paper (i.e. received a
grade of Fail D, Fail E, Failed Compulsory Assessment or Failed
Terms), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the marks
and specific grades for these students to protect their privacy and
wellbeing. We consider that withholding this information is necessary
to protect against the identity of these students being determined or
inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be
disclosed. Accordingly, in the event that there are fewer than five
students who have failed SOCI305 for Semester 1 2023, we will withhold
this information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.
We will be in touch once the results have been finalised for this paper.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request,
section 28(3) of the Act provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman
to investigate and review this response. However, we would welcome the
opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
Ngâ mihi

Dear UoO - Official Information Act,
Many thanks for your email. I see no need to complain to the Ombudsman as that is an entirely legitimate reason for delaying the request. May I ask what timeframe I am now looking at though before you release the results considering that it is now a month into semester 2?
Yours sincerely,
BR
