Sheriffs of New Zealand
Lance Watson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
The request was successful.
From: Lance Watson
Kia ora Te Tāhū o te Ture,
My request is regarding the Senior Courts Act 2016, namely sections 35-36.
1. Is the appointment of Deputy Sheriffs still a common practice in New Zealand? If not, when was the last time this practice was used?
2. Is the arrest of persons in accordance with an order of the High Court by a Sheriff still a common practice in New Zealand, as opposed to arrest by the New Zealand Police? If not, when was the last time a registrar (acting as a Sheriff) or Deputy Sheriff arrested someone under the powers granted to them in this act?
This question is purely academic, as I am curious how active the role of Sheriff still is in New Zealand, so any other information you may be able to easily provide on the duties of a Sheriff would be appreciated.
Ngā mihi,
Lance Watson
