Information Request – Traffic calming measures
Thank you for your information request dated 13 August 2023 asking for the fol owing
information
:
1. Was any of the emergency services such as FENZ, Hato Hone St John's or Police
consulted in regard to the traffic calming measures such as speed humps and slower
speed limits in Hamilton?
2. Do the Emergency services have any record of injuries to staff going over traffic
calming speed humps under the HSE Act 2015?
3. Do the emergency services report any delays to their incidents due to lowered speed
limits and traffic calming in Hamilton?
4. Has their been an increase in traffic accidents due to the traffic calming measures or
added bike lane design in Hamilton?
5. Do the emergency services have updated information from the Hamilton City Council
and Waka Kotahi of changes to the speed limit and road changes in Hamilton?
On 24 August 2023, questions two, three, and five were transferred to Fire and Emergency by
National Emergency Management Agency.
Your request has been assessed in accordance with the provisions of the Official information Act
1982 (OIA). We answer each aspect of your request below.
2. Do the Emergency services have any record of injuries to staff going over traffic calming speed
humps under the HSE Act 2015?
Fire and Emergency have records of five traffic calming speed hump related injuries between 1
July 2017 and 13 August 2023. Two of these injuries were related to vehicle or appliance use, and
three were related to the speed humps being a tripping hazard. Medical treatment was only
required in one of the five incidents.
3. Do the emergency services report any delays to their incidents due to lowered speed limits and
traffic calming in Hamilton?
We do record response times to incidents, but we do not record speed limits or speed bumps
delaying response times in Hamilton. Therefore, this aspect of your request is refused under
section 18(e) of the OIA, because the information requested does not exist.
5. Do the emergency services have updated information from the Hamilton City Council and
Waka Kotahi of changes to the speed limit and road changes in Hamilton?
We interpret this question as asking whether Hamilton City Council and Waka Kotahi consult or
inform us on changes to speed limit and roading changes in Hamilton.
Hamilton City Council and Waka Kotahi consult Fire and Emergency on matters relating to speed
limit or roading changes in Hamilton and we provide feedback on these proposed changes.
