Tēnā koe M Stephens,
Thank you for your email of 2 September 2023 to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
(MBIE) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the fol owing:
Can I please get aggregated* data for the decade 2012/13 through 2022/23 for Afghanistan’s,
Syrians and Ukrainians:
Refugee and Protection Claims
Refugee and Protection Approvals
Refugee Quota Arrivals
Refugee Family Support Category Arrivals
Resident Visas decided (applications) approved.
Resident Visas decided (applications) declined.
*I'm looking for aggregated data so that any numbers that are <5 for any particular years are
included in a total without identifying data being added, as is the practice for the Refugee and
Protection Statistics Packs. For example. from 2013-14 to 2017-18 no Afghans are listed under the
Refugee and Protection Claims approvals. My reasoning is that by aggregating these with the
entire decade we can avoid any privacy concerns while giving an accurate view of intakes.
Our Response
Please refer to the below table for the requested data between the financial years 2012/2013 to
2022/2023, broken down by nationality as at 31 August 2023.

**Please note this is for refugee and protection claims only, as the number of residence approvals for
refugee quota arrivals and Refugee Family Support Category arrivals are the same as the arrival
numbers as they all hold New Zealand residence.
Where the number is less than five, this has been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect
the privacy of natural persons.
I have considered whether withholding that information is outweighed by other considerations which
render it desirable, in the public interest, to make that information available, in accordance with section
9(1) of the Act, however, it is our opinion that such grounds do not exist.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information
